Brown&Roberts Hardware store on Main St. in Brattleboro is showing their support for HatchSpace by offering our members this exclusive deal on a starter tool kit.   We tried to select the sort of tools woodbutchers generally keep near at hand: Tape, pencils, knife, multi-screwdriver, pliers, awl, and some basic chisels.  Also included is a soft tool bag and a set of drill bits (not shown) .  A value of over $100 is available to HatchSpace members for $89.99.   Go to B&R and ask for the HatchSpace starter kit.

The HatchSpace is making its downtown gallery debut at the Latchis Gallery space next to the main theater.   Pieces by Guild of Vermont Furniture Makers Eric Sprenger and Greg Goodman are on display along with works by HatchSpace co-founder Tom Bodett.   Eric will be on hand for the December 7 Gallery Walk, but mostly the space will serve as a window display advertisement for the HatchSpace shop and its upcoming Grand Opening in January.

Greg and Tom came across some surplus school lockers in the wilds of eBay and made the trek this past weekend to Worcester, MA to gather them up.

We have thirty-six 12 x 30 inch lockers and forty-eight 12 x 12 lockers, which will be rented for a nominal fee to members to keep their personal tools and belongings secure.

BRATTLEBORO β€” One of the founders of a new cooperative work space in downtown Brattleboro wants to share his love for woodworking with the community at large.

"It's a club in search of a clubhouse," said Tom Bodett, of Dummerston.

Bodett, a well-known author and humorist, is one of the co-founders of The Hatch, an organization that was founded to produce live events "with the goal of reaching minds and hearts while generating funds to support the social and cultural infrastructure of the greater Brattleboro area and Vermont." While The Hatch is on a temporary hiatus, it most recently organized a series of story-telling events β€” Storytellers on A Mission β€” similar to NPR's The Moth.

Bodett's latest brainstorm is The HatchSpace, a membership work space where craftspeople, beginning with woodworkers, "exercise, share and move toward mastery of their craft."

According to its website, "The HatchSpace will operate as a community resource by subscription or membership for the use of local craftspeople, tuned to woodworking in the beginning and incorporating other crafts areas over time."

"This isn't for me," said Bodett, who partnered up with local cabinetmaker Greg Goodman on the project. "I've got a woodworking shop. I don't need another shop."

The HatchSpace "will provide on-site training and support, stationary machines not available to the beginner or home hobbyist, and eventually, access to other disciplines such as ceramics, glass, metal, and leather. The space will provide a gathering place for area craftspeople to exchange knowledge, ideas and fellowship."
