“Proof” of Concept, Joint Printmaking Program

Over two Saturday’s, students dual enrolled in a new joint program of First Proof Press and HatchSpace had the opportunity to learn hand carving techniques and printmaking.

During the first workshop using the Bench Room at HatchSpace, instructor Dan Chiaccio introduced students to basic principles, tools and processes of woodblock carving. Using plywood, students first transferred an image on to the surface and then used hand-carving tools to produce the printing plate.

In the second workshop Dan introduced students to the printing shop at First Proof Press. Learning basic inking tools and techniques, workshop participants then used a traditional rolling press to transfer the ink from their plates onto paper.

The course was a success and the first of what we hope will be a full range of collaboration opportunities including joint framing courses.
