Design Your Woodworking Vision

Wednesday, June 9, 2021 6-9 pm

Learn how to manifest your vision into a viable shop plan through a step by step planning and drawing process. Your instructor will take the class through aesthetic and functional considerations, guiding participants through three dimensional drawings, joinery and detail options, and a cut list for use in the wood shop. Bring percolating ideas to explore, some graph paper, a pencil, a straight edge or ruler, and tape measure.

Intro to Digital Design for CNC Carving or Engraving

Wednesday, June 30, 2021   9-12 am

This class is a three hour hands-on workshop designed for high school students. Using a web-based CNC software platform that allows students to design and carve from a single program, students learn the basics of three dimensional design. Easy to use and requiring no prior knowledge, students will design a 6 x 6" two color mosiac tile of  2-color HDPE plastic in Easel to learn CNC basics.  Students can personalize their project and bring it to life by manufacturing on our X-Carve machine, a computer numerical controlled machine (CNC).  Learn Easel and X-Carve and transfer your skills to carving on wood or other materials. This workshop will turn students into "makers"!  Check out projects online to see the possibilities.

Aldo Leopold Bench

Saturday, July 24, 2021  9-12 am

This is a simple outdoor bench with a design credited to one of the early environmentalists named Aldo Leopold.  Class will start with a brief discussion of Leopold and his writingsMade with 2x6 dimensional cedar lumber, it is held together with deck screws and bolts. Using just a drill press ,miter saw, and impact driver drill, with some hand tools for smoothing edges, each participant will take home their own bench. Included will be a Vermont Natural Coatings sealer. Materials included in price.

Bending Wood with Steam: Make a Firewood Hoop

Saturday/ Sunday  June 26 and 27, 2021 9-12 am

In this introductory course, we will learn the technique of using steam to make wood elastic and capable of bending. We will us a "steam box" to soften wood pieces so that they can be bent into a circle.  Our finished project will be a firewood hoop that you can use to hold your firewood (and show off your adventurous making skills).  This course will cover the basics of selecting and using wood for steam bending, an overview of bending forms and the bending process, and some techniques for cleaning up and polishing a bent form for use in daily life.  We will also use the drill press and some hand tools.  No previous experience with either steam bending or woodworking required.

Bending Wood with Steam: Make a Simple Coat Hook

Saturday/ Sunday July 17 and 18. 2021  9-12 am

Curious about bending wood using steam and heat?  Need a fun little feature to hang your stuff on by your front door?  This is a perfect introductory workshop!  We will steam some planks and bend them, and use a lathe to turn a knob or hook that we install for hanging a coat or bag.  This course will cover the basics of selecting and using wood for steam bending, an overview of bending forms and the bending process, and some techniques for cleaning up and polishing a bent form for use in daily life.  We will also use the drill press and some hand tools.  No previous experience with either steam bending or turning is required.

Bend Wood by Lamination: Make a Squiggle Shelf

Saturday/ Sunday August 28 and 29, 2021  9-12 am

Learn to bend wood using thin trips stacked together and shaped around a form. We will use these curved wooden parts in a functional, sculptural, wall mounted shelf.  We will make our own templates for bending the strips, and laminate our curves together.  We’ll then use those templates to aid in cutting some simple joinery for a few shelves, learning about working safely and accurately with curved parts.

Sharpening Tools in the Japanese Fashion

Saturday, June 26, 2021     9-12 am

Learn how to create and maintain one on chisels and plane irons using waterstones. Beginning with theory and moving on to the basic tool kit, the primary focus will be on  the hands on process of honing hand tools in the Japanese fashion turning neglected edges into gleaming blades.

Build a Bandsaw Box

Focusing exclusively on the bandsaw, each student will make a lidded box using only this versatile tool and a few hand tools.  Learn to use the bandsaw for straight and curved cutting.  Learn to turn tapered and curved forms in functional and beautiful boxes.
